“Contrails” by All The Luck In The World – A Song Review

“No puns involving our name, please. Everything else encouraged.” That’s the plea on the Facebook site of All The Luck In The World, an Irish-born trio now based in Germany. Light heartedness travels well. So does the talent to evoke emotions via harmonized lyrics – “In every lose, there’s discovery.”

“Contrails” is a single from the album “A Blind Arcade.” The album is scheduled for release on February 23. All The Luck In The World is recognized for its storytelling in song. In explaining the album titled, they stated, “A Blind Arcade is an architectural term for a row of adorning arches that are superimposed onto a solid wall. To us, it represents the entire process of creating these songs and the sounds within them.”

The members of the band are Neil Foot, Kelvin Barr, and Ben Connolly. They identify their hometown as Roundwood, Co. Wicklow, Ireland. Ben said about the single:
“’Contrails’ was one of the first songs we started working on for this record. The lyrical framework for the song came about as a result of us giving some time to the thought that people’s lives often cross paths in such arbitrary situations, and that meaningful connections can occur even in seemingly fleeting moments.”

Lyrics of “Contrails” by All The Luck In The World
We’ve grown too quickly
With open flaws and lack of grief
And you have broken into me
You are the best kind of thief

The less we know,
The more we seek

In these halls I take you in
The morning mint and your summer skin
Your summer skin
And I could read the books under your arms
In your eyes,
Sleepless we wait to arrive
Only to leave

The less we know
The more we… seek

We’re the undeveloped film
In tourists’ clothes
We’re the keepsakes and souvenirs
Resting beneath the folds

These forgotten reminders
Emblematic of everything
Of what we are and we will be
Or of “almosts” and “could have beens”

The less we know
The more we… seek
The less we know
The more we seek
The more we seek
In every lose, there’s discovery

We just caught the tail end of the last call
We made it better for a short time
Standing in a long line

We’ve grown too quickly
With open flaws, the lack of grief
The less we know, the more we seek
And our lines uncrossed, the quiet crimes
Of the richest thieves

Quoting the press materials from All The Luck In The World:
As for the music video, it’s a different storyline. Thomas approached us and told us that he had some ideas for our music, and we had some discussion about collaborating. We were really impressed by [Director] Thomas Vernay's catalogue of work, and decided that for this song we would be give him free reign to interpret the piece of music himself, and to create a story accordingly. Thomas had a clear vision and it turned to be a nice opportunity for us to see a different way in which our music could be interpreted.
