“Kill All the Lights” by Samuel Jack – A Song Review

The soulfulness in Samuel Jack’s voice carries an authority that commands attention, and listeners respect that authority. His first 2018 single release, “Kill All the Lights,” shows yet another increase in his emotional commitment. And the single reaches back to the roots of the Soul genre in its use of a gospel choir.

Jack also contributes the piano, which provides contrast to the emotive depth during the intro, outro, and other times when the lyrics aren’t driving the track. Then, when the song’s message is being delivered, the piano is more aligned with the Soulful delivery.

In referring to the single, Samuel Jack explained:
"This song is about a very poignant moment in my life when frankly, things weren’t going so well. A time when 'life' was getting on top of me, a time when I just wanted it all to go away. Sometimes people need some respite, an escape, to forget and reconnect, and to me, Kill All the Lights has become that, my own form of medicine”.

Samuel Jack was born in London, but spent time in Clapham, Johannesburg and the Netherlands before moving away from his parents at age 16. He has returned to the England, writing and recording near Somerset.

Lyrics of “Kill All the Lights” by Samuel Jack
Oh, I’ve been sleeping on
On a bed of stone
And I break my back

And I. I wonder how
I’ve fallen down
Into this trap again

Riddling my mind, as I’m
Staring at a dirty wall
Lying with the bottle tops
Writhing round on the floor

Kill all the lights
Fade to black
Ease my mind
I could murder a drink for my sins
But my money’s running dry
Oh, I just gotta get me outta here
Gotta get me something more
Gotta pick my feet up
And walk them out the door
Oh I could be so much more
I don’t wanna fight it tonight
So kill all the lights.

There’s a letter by, by the tableside
That I left myself
It told me to, change my ways
And find a place
To sleep in peace again

Bangin’ on the bedroom wall
Turn that music off
Don’t know what they’re fighting for
Wouldn’t call their bluff
Wondering why I’m lost
As I close my eyes
Wondering if it stops
By the morning time

Kill all the lights
Fade to black
Ease my mind
I could murder a drink for my sins
But my money’s running dry
Oh, I just gotta get me outta here
Gotta get me something more
Gotta pick my feet up
And walk them out the door
Oh I could be so much more
I don’t wanna fight it tonight
So kill all the lights

Kill all the lights

Kill all the lights
Fade to black
Ease my mind
I could murder a drink for my sins
But my money’s running dry
Oh, I just gotta get me outta here
Gotta get me something more
Gotta pick my feet up
And walk them out the door
I could be so much more
I don’t wanna fight it, no
I don’t wanna fight it, no
So kill all the lights
Kill all the lights
Kill all the lights, now
