Grey’s Anatomy and Lowell’s "War Face"

Reviewed by: Michelle Darrah

Over the years, I have learned to have my Shazam app ready for each new season of Grey’s Anatomy.  The show has a well-deserved reputation for its thoughtful soundtracks and song choices. The ending of season 2, with Snow Patrol’s “Chasing Cars” playing as a character passes away, is one of the best examples. Another Indie Obsessive blogged-about band, Lord Huron, has been featured on the show with the song “Time to Run.”
Lowell with “War Face” now joins the ranks of songs featured on Grey’s Anatomy, in its 14th season.

Elizabeth Lowell Boland, known as Lowell, is a Canadian signer and songwriter. "War Face" comes from her latest album, ‘Lone Wolf.’

"War Face" opens with clapping patterns and background singers who continue throughout the song. The chorus repeats with two main phrases, “You had me howlin’“ and “I wear my war face.” The repetitive nature of the song and lyrics allow you to sing along from first listen.
The song quiets down with a play on words from the children’s nursery rhyme Humpty Dumpty. “All of my horses and all of my men couldn’t put us back together again.” The energy then picks back up through the end of the song.

Thanks Grey’s Anatomy for another artist and song find.

Lyrics of “War Face” by Lowell
Love faith
Like a wave
Changing seasons
Pull on my sleeves and
I got my bourbon
I got my jacket
I won't be hurtin'
I won't be hurtin'

You had me howlin'
You had me howlin'
You had me howlin' at the moon
I heard your echo
I heard your howlin'
I heard your howlin' in every room

I wear my war face
I wear my war face
I wear my war face
I'm never gonna take you back again
I wear my war face
I wear my war face
I wear my war face
And I'm never gonna take you back again

Can't catch a break
You left me bleedin'
Got away with treason
I lead the battle into the trenches
I learned my lesson
I count my blessings

You had me howlin'
You had me howlin'
You had me howlin' at the moon
Oh yeah I'm howlin'
Oh yeah I'm howlin'
Oh yeah I'm howlin' whenever you

I wear my war face
I wear my war face
I wear my war face
I'm never gonna take you back again
I wear my war face
I wear my war face
I wear my war face
And I'm never gonna take you back again

All of my horses and all of my men
Couldn't put us back together again
All of my horses and all of my men
Couldn't put us back together again
All of my horses and all of my men
Couldn't put us back together again

I wear my war face
I wear my war face
I wear my war face
I'm never gonna take you back again
I wear my war face
I wear my war face
I wear my war face
And I'm never gonna take you back again

All of my horses and all of my men
Couldn't put us back together again
And I'm never gonna take you back again
All of my horses and all of my men
Couldn't put us back together again
